Habit #1 (of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens (Kids))

Habit #1 - Be Proactive!
Posted on 10/24/2018

This is what we are learning this week:

Reactive vs. Proactive  - Which one are you?

Reactive Language:

Proactive Language:

“It’s your fault.”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean that.”

“If only…..”

“I’ll get right on that.”

“I just can’t decide.”

“I’m not really interested, but thank you.”

“That’s not fair.”

“I’m sure we can come up with another alternative.”

“That’s just the way I am.”

“I can do better than that.”

“I’ll try.”

“I’ll do it.”

“I have to.”

“I choose to.”

“I can’t.”

“There’s gotta be a way.”

Proactive people:

  • Are not easily offended
  • Take responsibility for their choices
  • Think before they act
  • Bounce back when something bad happens to them
  • Always find a way to make it happen
  • Focus on things they can do something about, and don’t worry about things they can’t.

Just Push Pause.

Stop. Take a moment to just wait before reacting.

While you are pausing, use some tools:

  • Self-awareness: “I can stand apart from myself and observe my thoughts and actions.”

  • Conscience: “I can listen to my inner voice to know right from wrong.”

  • Imagination: “ I can think of new ways to solve problems.”

  • Willpower: “I have the power to choose.”

Do you know a can-do person?

What makes him/her a can-do person?

Are you a can-do person?
